What an employee really costs in Brazil
The salary is R$ 2,008. The cost is R$ 4,605.
Not an estimate and not a worst case. It is the standard arithmetic of Brazilian employment law applied to an operational role, with every parameter stated so you can reproduce it.
- 2012operating since April
- 500+professionals under management
- 400+clients served
The full monthly cost, line by line
Operational role, R$ 2,008 salary, R$ 650 in benefits, company under the Lucro Presumido or Lucro Real tax regime with the usual rates.
| Line | Monthly | Appears on the payslip? |
|---|---|---|
| Salary | R$ 2,008.00 | Yes |
| 13th salary (one twelfth accrued) | R$ 167.33 | No |
| Holiday pay plus one third | R$ 223.11 | No |
| Employer social security, accident and third-party levies | R$ 666.77 | No |
| Severance fund (FGTS) | R$ 191.88 | No |
| Provision for the 40% severance penalty | R$ 76.75 | No |
| Benefits (transport and meals) | R$ 650.00 | Partly |
| Cover for the post during holidays | R$ 331.99 | No |
| Cover for ten absences a year | R$ 138.91 | No |
| Payroll accounting | R$ 100.00 | No |
| Uniforms, PPE and occupational health exams | R$ 50.00 | No |
| Total | R$ 4,604.73 | 2.29 × |
R$ 2,596.73 a month never reaches the payslip.
That is the gap between what the employee sees and what leaves your account. It is not hidden and it is not unusual — it is simply what Brazilian employment law costs. The mistake foreign budgets make is not underestimating a line. It is comparing a supplier quote against the salary instead of against the total.
The four costs almost nobody budgets
The statutory charges are at least documented. These four are the ones that get discovered in month three.
Cover during holidays. Every employee takes thirty days a year. If the post has to stay staffed, someone fills it, and that someone costs a full month spread over twelve.
Cover for absences. Ten absences a year is a conservative assumption for an operational role. Covering them at short notice costs more per hour than planning them.
Payroll accounting. A per-employee monthly fee that scales with headcount.
Uniforms, protective equipment and occupational health examinations. Required by law, renewed periodically, and audited.
And the number is about to move
Constitutional Amendment 141, in force since 16 October 2026.
The maximum working week fell from 44 to 40 hours and weekly paid rest doubled from one day to two, with no salary reduction permitted. The ceiling is 42 hours from December 2026 and 40 hours from December 2027.
Holding the same coverage with 42 hours instead of 44 takes roughly 5% more person-hours; at 40 hours, about 10%. The cost per employee does not change — the number of employees does.
If you are budgeting a Brazilian operation for 2027, budget the headcount at 40 hours, not at 44.
How to read an outsourcing quote against this
One rule, and it removes most of the confusion.
Compare the quote against R$ 4,605, not against R$ 2,008. A supplier price that looks expensive beside the salary is usually being compared with the wrong number.
Then check what the quote includes. If cover for holidays and absences, uniforms, PPE, occupational health exams and supervision are not in it, they are not free — they are simply still yours.
And ask what documentation arrives monthly. Under Brazilian law the hiring company can be held subsidiarily liable for a supplier's unpaid labour obligations, so that paperwork is part of what you are buying.
Reproduce the number yourself
The calculator on our Portuguese site runs the same arithmetic.
Use these parameters and you will land on the same figure: salary R$ 2,008, benefits R$ 650, ten absences a year, R$ 100 of payroll accounting and R$ 600 a year of uniforms and examinations, under the Lucro Presumido or Lucro Real regime.
Change the salary and the multiplier barely moves. That is the useful part: whatever the role, budget roughly 2.3 times the salary and you will not be far off.
